FUT Hair Transplant

FUT Hair Transplant

What is FUT Hair Transplantation?

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), also known as strip harvesting, is a surgical hair transplantation technique. It involves removing a strip of tissue from the donor area, typically the back or sides of the scalp, and extracting individual hair follicles from that strip for transplantation into the recipient area.

Here’s a breakdown of the FUT hair transplantation procedure:

1. Donor Area Preparation: The patient’s hair in the donor area is trimmed to a short length. The area is then sterilized, and local anesthesia is administered to numb the scalp.

2. Strip Harvesting: The surgeon uses a scalpel to remove a thin strip of tissue from the donor area. The size and location of the strip depend on factors such as the patient’s hair density and the amount of hair needed for transplantation.

3. Donor Area Closure: Once the strip is removed, the surgeon carefully sutures or staples the wound closed. The incision is typically made in a way that allows the surrounding hair to cover the scar.

4. Dissection of Hair Follicles: The removed strip is handed over to a team of technicians who meticulously dissect it under a microscope. They separate individual hair follicles from the strip, preparing them for transplantation.

5. Recipient Area Preparation: The recipient area, where hair loss or thinning has occurred, is cleaned and numbed with local anesthesia.

6. Creation of Recipient Sites: Using a needle or small blade, the surgeon creates tiny incisions or recipient sites in the recipient area. The sites are strategically placed to ensure proper hairline design and natural-looking hair distribution.

7. Implantation of Hair Follicles: The dissected hair follicles are carefully placed into the recipient sites created by the surgeon. This process requires precision to ensure the correct angle, depth, and density of the implanted follicles.

8. Post-operative Care: After the transplantation is complete, the surgeon provides instructions on post-operative care. This includes guidelines for scalp care, such as keeping the scalp clean, avoiding strenuous activities, and following a prescribed medication regimen if necessary.

FUT hair transplantation has been widely used for many years and can provide excellent results in terms of hair restoration. However, it’s important to note that the technique does leave a linear scar in the donor area, which can be covered by surrounding hair. FUT may be recommended for patients who require a larger number of grafts or for those who have specific hair loss patterns.

Consulting with a qualified hair transplant surgeon will help determine if FUT is suitable for your individual case and desired results. They can provide detailed information about the procedure, assess your candidacy, and offer personalized advice based on your specific circumstances.

FUT hair transplant harvesting by strip extraction in the donor supply is the meaning of “FUT”. 100% follicles are isolated under the microscope in order to get the thinest grafts possible and are transplanted into the recipient area. The FUT procedure gives totally natural results without having to shave or trim the hair for the operation, so you get to keep your hairstyle.

The strip harvesting is sometimes resulting in a fine thin scar, although 80% of our fut hair transplant operations end up with totally invisible scar thanks to trichophityc closure.

What is a follicular unit ?

The hair in every person’s scalp grows in tiny bundles called follicular units.

The follicular unit of the adult human scalp consists of 1-4 terminal (full thickness) hair follicles, however the most common form of follicular units are 1 and 2 hairs. In areas affected by genetic balding, the healthy terminal hairs are gradually replaced by hairs of smaller diameter and length called “miniaturized” hairs – the miniaturization process.

The follicular unit is seen on the surface of the scalp as a tiny group of hairs that appear to be growing together. They are best viewed under a microscope where they are seen as well-formed structures in the skin.

How to get a follicular unit by FUT hair transplant method ?

To get the optimal amount needed for the recipient area we always measure and count the “density” of follicular units per square cm with a microscopic camera before. This is always done when you meet a Elexus staff. With a formula we can define the necessary length and width of the strip to provide the number of Follicular Units needed on the receiver area.

The grafts are removed by the surgical extraction of a strip from the back of the scalp. In order to remove Follicular Units from the back of the scalp without damaging them, the donor tissue is removed in one piece. This technique is called “Single Strip Harvesting“, and it is an essential component of follicular unit transplantation as it not only preserves the follicular units, but it prevents damage (transection) to the individual hair follicles. It differs dramatically from the mini-micrografting technique of using a multi-bladed knife that breaks up follicular units and causes unacceptable levels of transection of hair follicles.

Preparing the follicular units under the microscope

Inthe next step Follicular Units are divided under stereoscopic microscopes.
Many clinics also use simple magnification or just normal lighting to divide the grafts. We at Elexus,  garantee complete stereo-microscopic dissection in writing. Because we know the ilmportance of complete preservation and quality cutting of the grafts- and we know this can only be done using a trained staff with quality microscopes: “Good worker, with good tools, for a good work”.

It is scientifically prooven that single strip harvesting combined with stereo-microscopic dissection enables around 25% more intact hair follicles in each procedure. Then, why isn’t it widely performed in every hair clinic? The reason is that it is more time consuming, requires special skill and training, a larger staff than doctors or clinics generally have in their offices, and is finally more costly to perform.

Closing of the donor area and resulting scar after a FUT hair transplant

With the new technological advances in donor closure, each operation performed by our doctors has a clear defined target : resulting scar should be invisible, so that even the hairdresser can’t find it.

In 80% of FUT hair transplant’s cases, the scars is simply not possible to spot. Before, the scar was a thin hairless line in the donor area and if you combed the hair in order to find it,you would find it! Even if it was 1mm thin. The trichophytic closure technique makes hair grow on the scar, and therefore there is no longer a hairless straight line across the donor area. You simply cannot find the scar !

A major advantage of follicular unit transplantation ( FUT hair transplant ), (besides preserving follicular units and maximizing growth) is the ability to use small recipient sites. Grafts comprised of individual follicular units are small because Follicular Units are themselves small, but also because the surrounding non-hair bearing tissue is removed under the microscope and doesn’t need to be transplanted. Follicular unit grafts can be inserted into tiny needle-sized sites in the recipient area, which heal in just a few days without leaving any marks.

When performed by a skilled surgical team, Follicular Unit Transplantation ( FUT hair transplant ) can provide totally natural looking hair transplants that make the full use of the patient’s donor supply to give the best possible cosmetic results in the fewest possible sessions.

FUT Method in Hair Transplantation

Follicular Unit Transplantation, also known as the FUT word, which is made up of the initials of the technique, has lost its popularity with the progress of technology in hair transplantation operations but it is still applied in some exceptional cases.

How to apply FUT Method?

There are 2 methods for hair transplant operations currently in use. The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method and the FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method. These methods differ in the way hair follicles are extracted from the donor area.

The steps other than this issue are almost the same. In FUT method, hair follicles are extracted by removing a strip of scalp in about 15-20 cm to 2 cm from the back of head between two ears. Then, hair follicles are harvested from the strip and individually transplanted to the recipient areas. The area where the strip of scalp was removed is closed with stitches.

The FUT hair transplant results in an incision scar in about 15-20 centimeter in size. FUT hair transplant recovery time is longer since an incision is performed on the scalp. Depending on the strain, rate of wound healing and quality of the surgical procedure performed, this scar may expand and there may be hair loss around the scar.

The only advantage of FUT hair transplant – which is not a significant advantage – is that scalp is removed in a strip by an incision so that it is not necessary to shave this area. Therefore, this method is preferred by women or men with long hair. In FUE hair transplant, the duration of operation can be several hours longer.

Advantages of FUT hair transplant

  • Operation is completed in a shorter time.
  • Hair shaving is not required for the operation.
  • It is a more suitable method for graft removal for patients with curly hair, especially in African hair type. However, the incision scar on nape might be remarkable in these patients using short hair.

Disadvantages of FUT hair transplant

Maximum 2000 grafts can be extracted, approximately. But, that number can range from 4500 to 5000 in FUE.

Scar remains on nape area after the operation. Surgical procedure and suture must be performed by a plastic surgeon.

Since the area of removed scalp is damaged, numbness might occur after the operation.

More bleeding occurs during the operation compared to FUE method.

Nape area is more painful after the operation.

SCAR RESTORATION AFTER FUT PROCEDURE

Scar revision may be necessary for those who have undergone FUT hair transplant surgery. The scar area on scalp can be thinned again by a surgical procedure, hair follicles can be transplanted to the scar area. Sometimes, scars might be concealed only by micropigmentation, also referred as semi-permanent make-up or dermal-pigmentation.

Who is the most suitable candidate for FUT hair transplant?

The FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) hair transplant technique is suitable for individuals who meet certain criteria. While an in-person consultation with a qualified hair transplant surgeon is necessary to determine the best approach for your specific case, here are some general factors that may make someone a suitable candidate for FUT:

1. Adequate Donor Hair: FUT requires a sufficient amount of healthy donor hair that can be harvested from the back or sides of the scalp. The density, quality, and availability of donor hair play a crucial role in determining candidacy for FUT.

2. Stable Donor Area: The donor area should have stable hair growth that is not affected by conditions such as androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) or other progressive hair loss disorders. Stability ensures that the transplanted hair follicles will continue to grow in the recipient area.

3. Specific Hair Loss Pattern: FUT may be more suitable for individuals with certain hair loss patterns, such as extensive hair loss or baldness in specific areas that require a larger number of grafts for coverage. FUT can provide a higher number of grafts in a single session compared to some other techniques.

4. Realistic Expectations: It is important for candidates to have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. While FUT can provide significant hair restoration, the final result may not be a complete restoration of the original hair density or hairline. Understanding the limitations and potential results is crucial for a successful outcome.

5. Good General Health: Candidates should be in good overall health, as any underlying medical conditions or medications may affect the suitability or success of the procedure. A thorough medical evaluation is typically conducted to assess the individual’s health status and determine if they can safely undergo the FUT procedure.

6. Age Considerations: While there is no specific age restriction for FUT, candidates who are experiencing hair loss at a young age should be evaluated carefully to ensure that their hair loss pattern has stabilized. It is generally advisable to wait until the hair loss has stabilized before considering surgical intervention.

7. Understanding the Procedure: Candidates should have a clear understanding of the FUT procedure, including the potential risks, benefits, and the recovery process. They should be committed to following pre-operative and post-operative instructions provided by the surgeon for optimal results.

It’s important to note that each individual’s case is unique, and a thorough evaluation by a qualified hair transplant surgeon is necessary to determine candidacy for FUT or other hair restoration techniques. The surgeon will consider various factors, including the extent of hair loss, donor hair availability, scalp condition, and individual goals, to provide personalized recommendations and guidance for the most suitable hair transplant approach.

Is FUT Transplant a Permanent Solution?

Yes, FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) hair transplant is considered a permanent solution for hair loss. During the procedure, healthy hair follicles are extracted from the donor area (typically the back or sides of the scalp), which are genetically resistant to the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) responsible for causing male pattern baldness. These DHT-resistant hair follicles are then transplanted into the recipient area, where they continue to grow hair naturally.

The transplanted hair follicles retain their genetic characteristics, meaning they are not susceptible to the effects of DHT in their new location. As a result, the transplanted hair is expected to continue growing throughout the individual’s lifetime, just as it would in the donor area. This makes FUT a permanent solution for hair loss in the treated areas.

It’s important to note that while the transplanted hair is permanent, the procedure does not create new hair follicles. The success and longevity of the results depend on the availability and quality of the donor hair and the skill of the surgeon in harvesting and transplanting the hair follicles.

It’s worth mentioning that although the transplanted hair is permanent, individuals may still experience hair loss in non-transplanted areas due to the natural progression of existing hair loss or other factors. In such cases, additional hair transplant sessions or complementary hair loss treatments may be required to address ongoing hair loss.

To ensure the best possible results and a lasting outcome, it’s important to consult with a qualified hair transplant surgeon who can assess your individual case, evaluate the quality of your donor hair, and provide personalized advice and recommendations based on your specific needs and goals.

F.A.Q. About Fut Hair Transplantation

What is FUT hair transplantation?

FUT is a surgical hair transplant technique that involves removing a strip of tissue from the donor area, dissecting it into individual hair follicles, and transplanting them into the recipient area.

How long does the FUT procedure take?

The duration of the FUT procedure can vary depending on the number of grafts being transplanted. It typically takes several hours to complete, with larger sessions potentially requiring multiple sessions spread over consecutive days.

Is FUT a painful procedure?

FUT is performed under local anesthesia, so the procedure itself is generally painless. However, patients may experience some discomfort or soreness during the healing process, which can be managed with prescribed pain medications.

Will there be visible scarring after FUT?

FUT does leave a linear scar in the donor area. However, skilled surgeons can perform the closure in a way that allows surrounding hair to cover the scar, making it less visible.

How long does it take for the transplanted hair to grow?

After FUT, the transplanted hair follicles typically shed within a few weeks. New hair growth usually begins within 3 to 4 months, and it continues to improve gradually over the following months.

Are the results of FUT permanent?

Yes, the transplanted hair follicles are genetically resistant to hair loss and are expected to continue growing hair throughout the individual’s lifetime, making the results of FUT permanent.

Can I style my transplanted hair like natural hair?

Yes, once the transplanted hair has grown sufficiently, it can be styled and treated just like natural hair. You can cut, dye, and style it as desired.

Are there any risks or complications associated with FUT?

As with any surgical procedure, FUT carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, and numbness in the donor or recipient areas. However, these risks are relatively rare, especially when performed by an experienced surgeon.

When can I return to work or regular activities after FUT?

Most patients can resume non-strenuous work or activities within a week after FUT. However, it’s advisable to avoid rigorous exercises or activities that may strain the scalp for a few weeks.

How many FUT sessions do I need for optimal results?

The number of FUT sessions required depends on the extent of hair loss and the desired hair density. A single session may be sufficient for some individuals, while others may require multiple sessions spread over time.
